Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you make of it.
I used to sincerely dislike that quote. I’d wholeheartedly defend why I believed that life was a game of luck. 90% of the things I disliked, things I felt were unjust were things that happened to me. Of course, I didn’t like it, but what could I do? When something bad happened, I’d feel bad and that made perfect sense. I’d have to be crazy or very lucky to succeed when life pelted lemons at my face.
I was stuck. In many ways, thinking the way I did took my control away entirely. I felt was in a world where I couldn’t succeed because I didn’t win the sperm lottery. I didn’t have rich friends or acquaintances. I didn’t know how to get rich by coding apps. I couldn’t get ahead, and the more excuses I made, the more I believed it.
There was a quote by Henry Ford,
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right”
Mindset makes reality. Life is going to happen whether you want it to or not; we have no control over that. But it’s up to you to get pushed down by that or to get up despite it.
As soon as the 10/90 rule is applied, a shift happens. Suddenly you’re on the upswing. I don’t believe that some people are just lucky. I believe luck happens the more you work. When life happens and you keep going, you are 100% more likely to succeed than if you stay down.
Is it hard? You bet. There are times I want to give up. Things don’t go right, my business comes within inches of closing down. Or worse, it does close down. I have bills to pay, and no idea where the money is going to come from.
But I didn’t give up. I found the money that I’d needed, and business picked up. I’ve said it before, you can’t climb up a mountain by looking down all the time. Sometimes you really and genuinely won’t know what to do next. It’ll feel like it’s all over. You don’t know that success is right around that figurative corner.
In any worthwhile pursuit, you’ll find infinitely more doors shut on you than open. But you only need to walk through one door to get where you’re going.
You don’t know that all you need to succeed is within you until you begin looking for it.
You don’t know that life isn’t over until you create meaning in what’s left.
You don’t know that you live in abundance until you discover what abundance is to you.
The 10% of what happens to you can feel completely frustrating. Keep your head up, make it awesome anyways. That 90% being what you make of it gives you 100% control of your life. And that is cool.
