TPM 029 : Creating Connection with Yourself and Others, with Erika Gable
A Powerful Mindset: Finding balance in being confident enough in what you do to bring in new business/expand, but humble enough that you know that it’s not just about you. Having the flexibility to realize that sometimes you need to change what you do or how you do it, to achieve the same goal.
This week we dive into the world of consulting with Erika Gable, at Gable Consulting, where she’s bridging the gap between corporations, nonprofits and philanthropy.
I found it pretty hilarious, and awesome, her thought process in creating her business. She had a job in mind, and didn’t find that exact job description when she got out of school, so she decided that she would create her ideal job. That is a thing that people actually do! What are some ways that you could think outside the box?
A nifty mindset to develop is to keep an eye open for the gaps. Where, in your market or in your field of interest, is there a gap, or an area that can be improved? This doesn’t just go for creating a business either! In your workplace, what are some areas that can be improved? I know there’s no shortage of grips that we have about office practices and ways that we do things, what would be a better way to get the job done? A good idea will only be a good idea until it’s acted upon.
Communication is key. Nobody is really good at it without practice. If you aren’t satisfied with the level of communication in your life, you aren’t stuck! The more you practice, the better you’ll get. If you’re introverted like I am, it’ll definitely be an uncomfortable process, but it’s definitely worth it.
Erika brings this up in the episode, and I think that it does need restating: everyone can suffer from the imposter syndrome. Self-confidence and belief in yourself takes consistent work. It’ll often rear its ugly head around the corner and keep us from taking action. When that happens, when you don’t see the value in yourself and what you have to offer, you’ve got to take that action anyway.
No matter what you do, you want to add value. Leave a room, a situation, a relationship, better than you found it. A career or business built on pushing others down doesn’t lift you up. Understand that if you pursue what you value, and help others to achieve what they value, will raise everyone to accomplish their goals. Create win-wins whenever possible!
Learn from others as much as possible, but don’t do that so much that you forget to listen to and discover yourself! Self-creation is an ongoing process in living your ideal life. Begin the journey and figure out what works best for you.
