TPM 043 : Creating a Community with Stephan Harman
A Powerful Mindset: Awareness and the ability to change.
This week’s episode features Stephan Harman, co-founder of Fusian.
This week we hear from Stephan Harman, co-founder of Fusian. For those who don’t know, Fusian is a sushi joint here in Ohio. Instead of just being handed a menu and ordering, you are able to create your sushi however you want it. The style is sort of how you can build your own burrito at Chipotle, only with Sushi.
I loved this interview for many reasons. Stephan was an early mentor when I was still in college. He and a co-founder gave a talk during a lecture that I was in. I saw two young guys starting a business and of course I wanted to connect. They were kind enough to meet with me and share their experience starting a business, and answered all of my questions, and didn’t get annoyed (or didn’t appear annoyed). When I reached out again this year to feature him in an interview, I was stoked that he agreed.
Stephan talks about his entrepreneurial experience, starting and running several different businesses around the U.S.
He talks about how he discovered his passion for building things, and the ways that he has been able to express that in his life. For those of you who know that you have a passion or interest, and for those of you who feel like you are interested in too many things and don’t know which to take action on – this is for you.
He also talks about the importance of community, and why this is one of the foundations that Fusian was built on. They didn’t want to simply open up a sushi restaurant. They wanted to create a business that truly added value to the community and the people who live in it. This is something that every business owner and potential business owner should take a note on.
Awareness is huge. I love that he mentioned this as the foundation for a powerful mindset.
We need to know our why. Why do you work your job? Why do you have that hobby? Why did you start your business? Without knowing your core-motivation, we often end up making decisions in the dark.
Our environment is always changing. We need to be able to change right along with it, without losing ourselves. If you are familiar with your why, then you’ll be better equipped to make intentional change, rather than random change.
