TPM 015 : Ocean Diving to Protecting Companies in Cyberspace with Jim Ford
In this week’s episode, I have a chat with Jim Ford, CEO, and Co-Owner of Simplicity Virtual. We talk about how he went from being an aspiring marine biologist on the beaches of sunny Florida, into co-founding and operating a Strategic IT Management company in Columbus, Ohio.
Out the gate, he opens up about his near-death experience, while diving. He talks about how he handled receiving the information of not being able to pursue his passion any further. Of course, for a little while, he took a break until he could figure out what he wanted to do next. What I found inspiring is he didn’t just try one other thing, but he kept his options open and went into many different professions and tried a lot of jobs. He continually put himself into positions that lead him to climb into new jobs, all the while building skills that made him more and more valuable to companies in the professional workplace. He did all this while being in school.
His story is unconventional in a different kind of way. It goes to show that you can get experience that you need in any number of ways. I went about it through building and operating different businesses around the country, and his story is one where he worked in different jobs across industries, climbing the ladder at an accelerated rate, all without a college degree. He kept his mind open to new experiences, and went for it!
What if it were possible to have what you are passionate about and what you do for a living to be one and the same? If you believe that it’s possible, then it’s possible. You don’t have to up and quit your own job, but believe that it’s a possibility in your life, keep that focus in your mind, and your subconscious will begin to direct the actions you take in order to make it happen for you.
Even if one path that you are on gets derailed; if you are unable to pursue a passion you’ve devoted your life to- don’t let that stop you. As hard as that may be, feel it. Be present with yourself. And allow yourself to move on, to move past it. You never know what opportunities can come into your life if you continually put yourself into a situation for developments to happen. Allow yourself the freedom to discover your own purpose in life.
